Senior author showcases limited-edition books at local Litquake event

Former Los Altos resident Frederica Postman, who now lives at Moldaw Residences in Palo Alto, creates limited-edition artists’ books like “The True Collector.” She showcased her talent last month at Litquake Palo Alto.

Former Los Altos resident Frederica Postman discussed her limited-edition artists’ books last month at the second Litquake Palo Alto, a festival of books, community and ideas held at the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center.

Postman, now a resident of Moldaw Residences in Palo Alto, has enjoyed writing and expressing herself through art. After publishing and selling three limited-edition artists’ books on various topics, she is quite familiar with the book writing and publishing processes.

Her works, however, may not be familiar to the everyday reader. She creates specialized books that are produced in small editions and often as one-of-a-kind objects referred to as “uniques.”

“These can be hard to describe,” Postman said. “They are handmade books – literally, works of art – and the collectors who buy them treat them as such. They are not just something you take out of a library.”

Postman was a letterpress printer for 50 years, so she began creating the books herself with artist Bonnie Stone, who illustrated them. Together, they completed the entire printing process and would sell their painstakingly crafted masterpieces.

“The True Collector,” for example, is a handmade book assembled alphabetically about particular things people collect, with a short essay on each letter. Postman and Stone created only 100 copies, which sold out at The Woodlands Museum in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.

“The entire process of these literary pieces of art coming together is like watching your child grow,” Postman said. “The end result brings tremendous satisfaction and pride. It’s work, but it’s also great pleasure.”

Postman had attended previous Litquake events in San Francisco to celebrate all kinds of literature. She said she appreciated participating in one closer to home – Moldaw residences is adjacent to the Oshman center.

“We are proud to have such renowned and accomplished authors like … Frederica living here at Moldaw,” said Miki Raver, lifestyles services director at Moldaw Residences. “And we’re thrilled to be connected with the JCC offering this Litquake Palo Alto event for the second year. It’s a great opportunity for our residents and the community to enjoy.”
