The Terraces opens

for ice cream social

The Terraces at Los Altos retirement community has scheduled “Music on the Green,” an ice cream social, 2-4 p.m. Sunday at 373 Pine Lane.

The event will feature ice cream in the Gazebo, root beer floats and make-your-own sundaes; banjo music and an informal sing-a-long; a balloon artist; a face painter; an information table with brochures about care available at The Terraces’ new Health Center; a construction update; and tours of the facility’s new swimming pool.

Admission is free and open to residents, neighbors and local schools families.

MV Senior Center hosts Resource Fair

The Mountain View Senior Center has scheduled its annual Senior Resource Fair 2:30-5 p.m. Sept. 26 at the center, 266 Escuela Ave.

The event will feature information on blood-pressure screenings, home care, housing, health, transportation, medical and life insurance, legal aid and volunteer opportunities.

Light refreshments will be served.

The city of Mountain View, El Camino Hospital and the Community Services Agency of Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills co-sponsor the event.

Admission is free and open to the public.

ECH sponsors workshops for family caregivers

El Camino Hospital has scheduled Family Caregiving 101, a series of free workshops designed to help family caregivers.

• 7 p.m. Sept. 26: “How to Increase Balance and Decrease Falls,” with Ellen Corman, MRA, and Tamar Semerjian, Ph.D.

• 7 p.m. Oct. 24: “Stress Reduction Techniques,” with Vickie Chang, Ph.D.; Ginger Oros, LMFT; and Janice Ososke, health, wellness and fitness entrepreneur.

• 7 p.m. Nov. 14: “Understanding Family Dynamics,” with Vivian Silva, MSW, and Christina Irving, LCSW.

Workshops are held at Avenidas Rose Kleiner Center, 270 Escuela Ave., Mountain View.

The Avenidas Rose Kleiner Center, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Stanford Geriatric Education Center and the Family Caregiver Alliance co-sponsor the workshops.

Avenidas schedules Caregiver Conference

Avenidas has scheduled its 10th annual Caregiver Conference 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Mountain View Senior Center and the Avenidas Rose Kleiner Center.

Dr. Edie Yau, director of diversity and inclusion for the Alzheimer’s Association, Northern California and Northern Nevada Chapter, is slated to deliver the keynote address, “Compassionate Communication.” Yau will outline strategies for improving communication skills in connecting with memory-impaired individuals and helping caregivers prepare for and respond to behavioral changes.

Session topics will include end-of-life caregiving, legal services, coping with cognitive decline and managing hospital stays.

Cost is $35 before Sept. 20, $40 after. Lunch is included.

The city of Mountain View and Home Instead Senior Care co-sponsor the event.

The Mountain View Senior Center is located at 266 Escuela Ave., and the Avenidas Rose Kleiner Center is adjacent at 270 Escuela.
