Downtown association gets new digs

Residents and merchants who want to visit the offices of the Los Altos Village Association (LAVA) may have to walk an extra block to locate it these days.

The downtown organization that represents and promotes more than 160 voluntary members – including numerous downtown merchants – relocated last week to a new home at 88 Main St., next door to Wells Fargo Bank.

The move comes after LAVA’s home for the past seven years, the second-floor offices above retailer Cover Story at 216 Main St., changed ownership recently.

LAVA Executive Director Nancy Dunaway said that while the new location may be “a little bit smaller,” downsizing from approximately 1,000 square feet to 750 square feet, the space fits her organization’s needs.

Chief among those needs, she said, is a locale near the downtown triangle’s daily bustle.

“It was very difficult to find office space downtown that was in our price range and was the right size and everything,” said Dunaway, who added that her organization’s former home is historical, having served as Los Altos’ first fire station.

The new location was LAVA’s base approximately 10 years ago. While Dunaway said she enjoyed that her offices overlooked Main Street for seven years, she jumped at the opportunity to secure the new digs once the space became available.

“We really like where we are,” she said. “This will serve us well.”
