More open than ever: Editorial

One of the Los Altos City Council’s objectives for 2015 is implementing an open-government policy. The title of the policy may be somewhat misleading, because it’s not as if the city has had a closed-government policy. But the new proposal goes beyon...

Gawande's "Being Mortal" proves an important book on aging

Books about death and dying are usually not on my list of “must reads.”

I couldn’t resist, however, the best-selling “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” (Metropolitan Books, 2014) by Atul Gawande.

Spiritual Life

Start something great by ringing in the new year with prayer

There is a tradition, which I’m told originates in the Midwest, that calls for people to pray in the new year. A few years ago, I was invited to a friend’s house and a number of people stayed up until midnight (approximately two hours pa...

RUTH MIRIAM ABBOTT

OBIT RuthAbbott

Long time Los Altos resident Ruth Miriam Abbott passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 89 on Tuesday, August 20, 2013.

Ruth was born to Ruthanna and Jack Wright on November 16, 1923 in Safford, Arizona. She was the eldest of 3 siblings (William, Polly and Janet) all whom have preceded her in death. Ruth married Richard Abbott on November 15, 1944 in Washington, D.C, they had two children and were married almost 69 years, more than 50 of those years were spent as residents of Los Altos.

Ruth was a devout christian and active member of Union Presbyterian Church in Los Altos for many years where she volunteered her time organizing things from the children's department to spaghetti melodramas. Ruth was well known for her seasonal boutiques where she and many friends would sell handcrafted foods and items to a long list of regular patrons. She had a great time organizing and creating things for these boutiques and passed this creativity and enterprising spirit down to her children and grandchildren.

Ruth loved to spend her time gardening, cooking and sewing and more recently learned to knit. She was an avid reader and spent many hours each day reading and was always ready to tell others about the great book she was reading. She was a part of a book club and also occasionally wrote poetry when inspired, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by Richard, her husband of almost 69 years; her Son Tim and his wife Marsha; her granddaughter Rochelle and her husband John; and her Grandson Matt. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheryl Abbott who passed away from complications of cancer in 2007.

Ruth will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, September 4th at the Union Presbyterian Church in Los Altos on University Avenue. All who knew and loved her are welcome.
