News Brief

On the eve of the first day of school, Bullis Charter School officials signed the Los Altos School District’s Facilities Use Agreement “under protest and duress,” according to a charter school press release.

The district insisted that charter school administrators sign the agreement before gaining access to the shared facilities on the Blach Intermediate School campus. After charter school officials initially refused, the district changed the locks on the new facilities at Blach, barring charter school teachers and staff from preparing for the school year, which began Aug. 21. The district eventually handed over the keys to the charter school, after an 11-day lockout.

“Our first responsibility is to our students, and we just couldn’t risk having the district changing the locks again on our facilities,” said Ken Moore, chairman of the charter school’s board of directors. “They made it very clear in the last few weeks that if we didn’t sign, there would be immediate negative consequences that would impact all our students.”

Subsets of the charter school and district boards were scheduled to meet Tuesday and Thursday this week to discuss Bullis Charter School’s objections to the FUA, which imposes attendance caps on its two campuses and grade-level restrictions at one site.
