New year opens for Adult Education

The Mountain View-Los Altos Adult Education program has opened fall registration.

Under new Director of Adult Education Keith Moody, the program offers a range of classes designed to “assist, stimulate and excite” residents of the local community, according to Adult Ed representatives.

Courses include high school and GED programs, English as a Second Language, arts and crafts, computer skills, physical fitness and language-arts offerings in creative writing and memoir writing.

As a cost-cutting measure, the catalog will not be mailed to residents. A complete course catalog is available online and at the Los Altos and Mountain View senior centers and libraries. Classes are held at locations throughout Los Altos and Mountain View. Addresses and a map are included in the catalog.

To download the catalog, visit mvla.net/view/1542.pdf.

To register, visit mvla.net/MVLA_Adult_Education.

For more information, call 940-1333.

Living Classroom seeks volunteers

The Los Altos School District’s Living Classroom Program seeks volunteers who enjoy working with students and appreciate nature.

The program reaches all grade levels in the district and includes hands-on education in science, math and social studies.

Information meetings are scheduled 9-10 a.m. Aug. 29 and Sept. 5 in the Springer School multipurpose room, 1120 Rose Ave., Mountain View.

Training is available to acquaint docents with the lesson content. All materials are provided. A docent and often an assistant docent along with one or two volunteer parents direct lessons inside or outside the classroom. Training sessions are scheduled Sept. 9, 16 and 23, and classroom management training is slated Sept. 30.

The Living Classroom program expanded to the Mountain View-Whisman School District last year and seeks volunteers for that program as well.

Information sessions for the Mountain View-Whisman program are scheduled 9-10 a.m. Friday and Sept. 4 in the Mountain View-Whisman School District conference room, 750-A San Pierre Way. Trainings are set for Sept. 16, 23 and 30 in the district conference room.

To introduce potential volunteers to the gardens used in Living Classroom lessons, officials are scheduled to host a tour of several of the Los Altos school gardens Oct. 7.
