The city of Mountain View adopted its current animal ordinance in 1972, with minimal changes since. Through its City Code, the city encourages responsible pet ownership and aims to ensure that residents are able to safely and peacefully enjoy their community.
The city council is in the process of reviewing Chapter 5 of the Mountain View City Code, which relates to animals, and has proposed a series of amendments to clarify existing provisions, update the ordinance to reflect current needs and incorporate the animal welfare industry’s best standards.
Topics under discussion include the number of animals allowed per home, rabies vaccination for cats, pet licensing, microchips versus metal tags for pets and dogs in city parks.
Mountain View residents are asked to voice opinions as part of the process by completing an online survey or attending a community meeting.
An ordinance addressing the suggestions will be drafted for the council’s consideration later this year.
The survey, available on the city’s website at mountainview.gov, is open through 5 p.m. Sept. 3. To locate the survey, select “The City is reviewing Animal Ordinance” under the scrolling “News and Events” in the center of the page.
The community meeting is scheduled 7 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Community Center, 201 S. Rengstorff Ave.
Information obtained from the survey and the meeting will be presented to the city council as part of a study session tentatively scheduled Sept. 17.
