Zinsman hired to coach MVHS baseball team

Courtesy of Mountain View High
Mountain View High baseball coach Zeph Zinsman was a two-sport athlete at Mitty.

Mountain View High administrators recently hired Zeph Zinsman as varsity baseball coach.

“We are pleased to have an accomplished athlete and kid-focused coach leading our baseball team in 2014,” new athletic director Shelley Smith said in a press release issued July 26.

Like Smith, Zinsman has experience coaching sports at Saratoga High. As a baseball assistant last season, he helped the Falcons win their first league title in school history. Zinsman attributed the team’s success to hard work, playing as a team and teaching his players how to respect the game.

The Mitty High graduate has spent more than six years as a private instructor and works with hitters at South Bay Sports Training.

Before he became a coach, Zinsman was an accomplished player who was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays. At Mitty, he was named Central Coast Section Player of the Year in 1997 by one publication. Zinsman earned All-America honors at Mission College and was chosen for the Southeastern Conference All-Regional Team while playing at Louisiana State.

Zinsman also starred in volleyball at Mitty and has coached the sport as well. He made the Junior Olympic Team four times and was twice voted Santa Clara Valley Athletic League Coach of the Year while guiding the Los Gatos High boys volleyball team.

Zinsman replaces Adam Petke as Mountain View baseball coach. Petke resigned near the end of his second year.
