GEORGE PETER MINALGA

June 18, 1920 to July 18, 2013

George P. Minalga died peacefully on Thursday, July 18, 2013 with his wife, Dorothy at his side in their Los Altos home. He was 93 years old.

He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and in 1945 graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and was elected to Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society. George went to work for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company at the dawn of the Space Age. His considerable contributions will always be remembered in the evolution of America’s spaceflight program, including work on the X-1, the first supersonic aircraft.

George met his forever love, Dorothy, at the Damien Club of St. Monica’s Parish, Los Angeles. They were married in 1951 and together began their family and their life. He loved being with family and children. His children and grandchildren were everything to him and he was always there for them … building a grade school project, fishing on a lake, learning to ski, simply listening to their stories, or celebrating their accomplishments. He will be missed, but his kindness will never be forgotten by Cecilia and husband Ray; Maryanne, husband Mathew and children Rebecca, Rachel, and Jamie; Josephine and children Christina, Matthew and wife Courtney, Phillip, and Bridgette; Rebecca and husband John Mark; Duncan, wife Pauline and daughter Veronica; and Peter and wife Melanie.

After retiring from Lockheed in 1989, George and Dorothy continued their adventures through life and the world. For 10 years, they participated in an annual pilgrimage, walking 72 miles over 3 days from Paris to Chartres, France, through woods and fields and over blacktop highways and country roads, sleeping outside and eating simple rations. Their pilgrimages were a celebration of their traditional Catholic values, so important to George and Dorothy.

Mass and funeral services were held Thursday, July 25, at Saint Margaret Mary Church, 1219 Excelsior Avenue, Oakland. The casket was interred at Alta Mesa Memorial Park, Palo Alto.
