Los Altos offers temporary home to SF Museum of Modern Art

When the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art closes its doors this summer for renovation, Los Altos is set to benefit from the disruption.

The museum is scheduled to bring part of its collection to town for “Project Los Altos: SFMOMA in Silicon Valley.” The exhibition will range throughout downtown Los Altos from November to March 2014, both indoors and out, with existing art as well as newly commissioned, site-specific projects.

SFMOMA is organizing the free exhibition in collaboration with the city and Passerelle Investment Co., the project’s lead sponsor, with major support from Christie’s and Randi and Bob Fisher.

Featured artists include Jeremy Blake, Spencer Finch, Charles Garoian, Christian Jankowski, Chris Johanson, Mike Mills, Katerina Sedá, Alec Soth and Jessica Stockholder.

Works include Blake’s Winchester trilogy, a video project inspired by the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose that explores American mythologies and identities.

A homegrown work is also on the list, an archival presentation of Garoian’s performance art, created with his students at Los Altos High School from 1969 to 1986.

Stockholder plans to transform a street intersection using color and form.

Soth is preparing photographs that “explore the emptiness and possibility of Silicon Valley, from the Googleplex to Steve Jobs’ garage; and others currently in development,” according to museum officials.
