Callegari replaces Derus as Lancers lacrosse coach

Callegari

Will Callegari and Greg Derus are coaches headed in opposite directions – literally.

Callegari is moving west to coach the St. Francis High boys lacrosse team in place of Derus, who is going back east.

Callegari plans to move to the area from Florida next month, according to St. Francis athletic director Michael Pilawski, who announced the coach’s hiring Thursday. Callegari will serve as a full-time history teacher at the school as well.

“We are extremely excited to have Will Callegari as the new head boys lacrosse coach here at St. Francis High School,” Pilawski said. “Will brings a wealth of knowledge and passion in the sport of lacrosse, as well as being a passionate history teacher.”

A 2006 graduate of Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston, Callegari played college lacrosse at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. After graduating in 2011, Callegari pursued his masters’ degree in curriculum and instruction at Florida State University, where he also served as an assistant coach for the Seminoles the past two seasons.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to serve as the head coach of the St. Francis lacrosse program,” Callegari said. “The prospect of working with such a motivated and hardworking group of student-athletes is something that every coach wants. This is truly a dream job for me.”

Callegari replaces Derus, who has returned to the East Coast to work at another high school, according to Pilawski. The Lancers went 12-7 overall and placed third in the West Catholic Athletic League this spring, Derus’ second season as coach.

“St. Francis High School would like to thank coach Derus for all of his dedication and hard work for the past two years with our boys lacrosse program,” Pilawski said. “He has worked tirelessly to lay the foundation for a very solid program.”
