New apartments along El Camino in pipeline

Expect more apartment units to pop up along El Camino Real in Mountain View.

Prometheus Real Estate Co. is currently in the public approval process with the city of Mountain View for its second phase of apartments on El Camino Real.

The Mountain View City Council approved the 165-unit first phase, which encompasses the former Tropicana Lodge and Western Appliance sites – approximately 2.5 acres – at 1720 and 1730 W. El Camino Real. Phase 2 includes an adjacent property, 1616 W. El Camino Real, formerly occupied by Austin’s restaurant.

A recently approved affordable housing project at 1581 W. El Camino Real, will feature 26 units for the “high-functioning, developmentally disabled,” according to city planner Randy Tsuda.

The site, approximately 300 feet southeast of Rich Avenue, is being developed in partnership with First Community Housing, a nonprofit affordable housing developer. Rental rates for the units will be affordable to “extremely low” and “very low-income” residents. The council committed $4.65 million to the project.
