Local Relay For Life celebrates decade of fighting cancer with this weekend’s event

Relay For Life participants embrace at last year’s event. This year’s Relay is slated Saturday and Sunday at Egan Junior High.

The 10th annual Relay For Life of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills is scheduled 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday on the track at Egan Junior High School, 100 W. Portola Ave., Los Altos.

Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature fund- raiser, invites local residents to participate in a 24-hour walk designed to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who have died of the disease and fight back by raising money for research.

The event includes a lap of honor by cancer survivors, a luminaria remembrance ceremony, games for children, live music and refreshments. Last year’s lap of honor featured 119 cancer survivors.

To date, 28 teams and 245 participants have raised $81,373.94, according to organizer Scott Stover. This year’s goal is to beat 2012’s total of $149,820.

“It’s not too late to form a team and raise money for Relay For Life of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills,” he said. “If you or a loved one has been touched by cancer, the Relay For Life is an amazing and uplifting event to celebrate, remember and fight back.”

The first local Relay For Life, held at Los Altos High School in 2004, drew more than 700 participants and raised more than $200,000. The event’s location shifted to Egan Junior High School beginning with the seventh annual event in 2010.

To volunteer, register, donate or for more information, visit www.relayforlife.org and search for “Los Altos” or “94022.”
