ALFRED L. PLOETZ

Alfred Ploetz died 5/21/2013 of lymphoma at age 92 in Papillion, NE. He was born in 1920 in West Valley, NY. He was the son of Elmer and Hattie Schultz Ploetz, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by two younger brothers, Leroy and Gordon. He is survived by his wife, Grace, children and spouses: Larry of Newark, CA; Kathy Newcomb of Papillion, NE; Linda Kronenfeld of Oro Valley, AZ; and stepson, Bruce Dudley Ploetz; five grandsons, Andrew, Benjamin, and Garin Newcomb, Michael and Jason D Kronenfeld; and a nephew, Tom Ploetz of Yorkshire, NY.

After graduating from high school in West Valley, NY, he attended Alfred University and graduated with a degree in engineering. Following graduation, he worked as a machinist, having three deferments from military service. He went into the army in 1944 and served with a unit of port engineers in Antwerp, Belgium, the mission of which was to put the port in operation as a supply port for the advance of American troops into Germany. His unit was the first support troop into Antwerp following the liberation of that city. Another function of the unit was to repair landing craft for the anticipation of crossing of the Rhine when boat crossing became unnecessary when the retreating German Armies neglected to blow the Remagen Bridge.

Following his discharge with rank of Sgt. from military service, he joined the US Geological Survey in Sacramento, CA. in 1946 which later headquartered in Menlo Park, CA. He held titles of Civil Engineer, Topographic Engineer, and Cartographer doing topographic surveys in the seven western states, working in field surveys, office photogrametry and cartography.

In 1955, he met and married his beloved wife, a widow, Grace Warwick Dudley. After 34 years with USGS, he retired in 1980 and remained in Mtn. View, CA where he had lived since 1959, until 2001 when he moved to Papillion, NE. Following retirement he worked as a tax preparer for H&R Block for ten years, took the professional exam for enrolled agent IRS for which he was licensed to represent clients before the IRS. After leaving Block, he did volunteer work, preparing tax returns at the senior center in Mountain View, CA.

Burial was in West Valley, NY. on May 31.
