Symphony kicks off summer with free Los Altos concert

Kathleen Chen may be only 16, but her virtuoso skills know few peers. Witness for yourself at the June 15 Peninsula Symphony concert in Los Altos.

The Peninsula Symphony has scheduled its fourth annual free outdoor concert in Los Altos to usher in the summer season. This year’s event is scheduled 6:30-8 p.m. June 15 at Hillview Soccer Field, 97 Hillview Ave.

Held in conjunction with the Los Altos Recreation Department’s Summer Concert Series and sponsored by the Town Crier, this year’s event features the talents of virtuoso violinist Kathleen Chen of Cupertino.

Chen, 16, winner of the Peninsula Symphony’s 2013 Young Musician Competition, will perform Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto.

Also on the program is Reinhold Glière’s “Russian Sailor’s Dance,” Arturo Márquez’ “Danzón No. 2,” Manuel de Falla’s “The Three-Cornered Hat, Suite No. 2,” Malcolm Arnold’s “Four Scottish Dances,” Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Tahiti Trot” and Edvard Grieg’s “Norwegian Dances.” Highlights from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Evita” will round out the program.

Symphony executive director Steve Carlton said the program, titled “Up North / Down South” with the Peninsula Symphony,” features intentionally lighter musical fare.

“We typically move away from the traditional classical style and provide a more wide range of music that is for the masses,” he said. ”Bring a picnic with your favorite food, favorite beverage and favorite friends. This will be a wonderful outdoor concert for the community that will put a smile on your face.”
