The Rotary and Kiwanis clubs of Los Altos recently awarded 2013 scholarships to students attending local middle and high schools.

The Los Altos Rotary Academic Scholarships presented to graduating high school students included a certificate and financial assistance ranging from $800 to $2,500 based on need.

Rotary scholarship recipients are: Mike Aguilar, Marissa Mason and Jasmine Sanchez, Alta Vista High School; Dan Meidinger, Mountain View Academy; and Sydney Magana, Timothy Young, Viet Nguyen and Kristen Redaniel, Mountain View High School.

Kimberly Kaiser of St. Francis High School received the first Billy Russell Scholarship, named in honor of the former president of the Rotary Club of Los Altos who died in 2008. Sung-Yee Guo of Los Altos High School received the Charles Cowan Scholarship for Science and Technology.

Outstanding students in the Los Altos School District intermediate schools received a certificate of accomplishment and $50. The Rotary Club recognized Katia Gibson and Zack Kaplan from Egan Junior High School and Douglas Curtis and Julie Daseking from Blach Intermediate School.

Rotary scholars must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and demonstrate a financial need.

The Kiwanis Club of Los Altos awarded $3,100 scholarships to five local high school students. The club annually recognizes students who overcome obstacles to succeed in high school and often are the first in their families to attend college. The scholarships are for seniors who plan to attend Foothill or De Anza college.

Kiwanis scholarship recipients from the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District are: Matthew Marent, Alta Vista High School; Joshua Tree Poblete and Jose Lopez, Los Altos High School; Erika Lama, Mountain View High School; and Hanlei Liang (Adult Education program).
