Bubble Wrap case ends in mistrial

An eleventh-hour insanity plea led to a mistrial in the case of a Los Altos woman accused of attempted murder. Four days into the jury trial, Laura Jean Wenke’s attorney advised San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Stephen Hall that a defense psychiatrist had concluded Wenke was not sane at the time of the crime in September 2011.

Hall declared a mistrial, dismissed the jury and continued the case. Two doctors will evaluate Wenke.

In the midst of an acrimonious divorce, Wenke arrived at her husband’s construction company in Redwood City dressed in a mechanic’s jumpsuit, which covered the Bubble Wrap she had encased herself in. She allegedly discharged a stun gun against her husband’s side before stabbing him in the chest and neck.

The husband, who survived, had a $2 million life insurance policy with Wenke listed as beneficiary. She originally pleaded not guilty and has been held without bail since 2011.

Mtn. View bank robbed

The Mountain View Police Department is investigating a May 22 bank robbery near the city’s border with Los Altos.

According to Mountain View Police Sgt. Sean Thompson, a male suspect armed with a handgun entered Blossom Valley Shopping Center’s Wells Fargo Bank at approximately 3 p.m. and demanded money from a teller.

Thompson said the suspect – described as 5 feet 10 inches tall with a medium build – exited the bank at 809 Cuesta Drive on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Thompson said the suspect was wearing a dark jacket and ski mask at the time of the robbery. He added that investigators haven’t determined if the suspect in last week’s incident was also responsible for a handful of bank and liquor store robberies earlier this year in Los Altos.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Mountain View Police Department at 903-6344.
