More open than ever: Editorial

One of the Los Altos City Council’s objectives for 2015 is implementing an open-government policy. The title of the policy may be somewhat misleading, because it’s not as if the city has had a closed-government policy. But the new proposal goes beyon...

Gawande's "Being Mortal" proves an important book on aging

Books about death and dying are usually not on my list of “must reads.”

I couldn’t resist, however, the best-selling “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” (Metropolitan Books, 2014) by Atul Gawande.

Start something great by ringing in the new year with prayer

There is a tradition, which I’m told originates in the Midwest, that calls for people to pray in the new year. A few years ago, I was invited to a friend’s house and a number of people stayed up until midnight (approximately two hours pa...

Pinewood School’s April production of “The Sound of Music” drew sold-out crowds and was nominated for eight Bay Area School Musical Theatre Awards.

Pinewood School recently received nominations in eight different categories in the Bay Area High School Musical Theatre Awards for its production of “The Sound of Music.”

Nineteen private and public high school musical theater programs competed in the 2013 Stage Top Honor Awards, modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, featuring productions of “Legally Blonde,” “Into the Woods,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Cabaret” and “We Will Rock You.”

Pinewood’s “The Sound of Music” marked the school’s first three-campus production, including children from the Lower and Middle campuses to fill the roles of the von Trapp children.

Over its two-weekend run, the production filled more than 900 seats, selling out the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College for every performance.

Talmage Wise, nominated for Best Leading Actor for his portrayal of Captain von Trapp, is competing to advance to the National High School Musical Theatre Jimmy Awards in New York City in June. If selected, he will vie for a $10,000 scholarship and a talent scholarship to New York University.

“I’m so honored to be nominated along with this group of gentlemen,” Wise said. “I’ve had the pleasure to perform with a few of them at the Bay Area High School Musical Theatre Showcase this past January and they are truly talented. It’s just such a wonderful opportunity to even have the chance to go to New York City to compete in The Jimmy Awards. I’m truly blessed.”

Students nominated for the Bay Area Awards include Garrett Biggs in the Supporting Actor category for his portrayal of Max Detweiler, Haley Longbottom in the Featured Actress category for her portrayal of Liesl von Trapp and Carson Robinette in the Featured Actor category for his portrayal of Rolf. Veronica Boyce was nominated in the Student Technical Achievement category for her work as student technical director under the supervision of Doug Eivers.

Art teacher Jared Leake was nominated for Graphic Design for creating the poster and program. Shenelle Williams, music teacher for seventh- through 12th-graders, was nominated in the Hair/Makeup and Musical Direction categories.

Winners in all categories will be announced at the Fourth Annual Bay Area High School Musical Theatre Awards Gala, scheduled 7 p.m. Monday at the California Theatre, 345 S. First St., San Jose. The evening will feature performances by the nominated high schools. Wise is scheduled to sing “Edelweiss.”
