Oaks sweep Sunday doubleheader, improve to 14-0

The Palo Alto Oaks, a semipro baseball team run by Los Altos High graduate Steve Espinoza, improved to 14-0 with Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of Fontanetti’s B team.

The Oaks, who play in the Stan Musial Division of the Western Baseball Association, won the first game 11-1 on the mercy rule and took the nightcap 6-4 at Palo Alto Baylands.

The Oaks had nine hits before an out was recorded in the opener, which lasted just seven innings. Brian Fleischli went 4-for-4 in the game, hitting a triple, double and two singles. Danny Ordonez and Gary Foster notched three RBIs each.

Dominic Hernandez threw the first four innings, surrendering Fontanetti’s lone run, and Gilbert Guerra tossed the last three without allowing a hit.

Second-game starter CJ Hillyer “was nearly unhittable,” general manager Espinoza said, striking out 10 batters and giving up one run over four innings.

The Oaks scored their first run in the third on a double by Sheldon Daquioag that scored Jordan Cortez.

Palo Alto scored twice in the fourth – on singles by Cortez and Trevor Demerritt – and put up single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, highlighted by Barry Knapp’s RBI triple in the latter.

The Oaks are scheduled to return to Baylands 11:30 a.m. Sunday for another doubleheader.
