New football coach, athletic director for MVHS

A coach from Saratoga is poised to take the helm of Mountain View High School's athletic department.

Shelley Smith will serve as both football coach and athletic director, positions vacated earlier this month by Toure Carter and John Payne.

Smith most recently worked as running backs coach and varsity defensive coordinator at Saratoga High School, where he previously coached the junior varsity football squad.

Mountain View-Los Altos High School District Superintendent Barry Groves wrote that he was recommending Smith to the board of trustees on May 13 for a July 1 start date.

Smith lives in Saratoga, where he graduated from Saratoga High School before playing college football at St. Mary's College. Groves wrote that for the last several years, Smith has been teaching middle and high school physical education in the San Jose Unified School District and that he'll also be a new physical education teacher at Mountain View. Smith has coached high school football for 11 years.

Last season Mountain View drew its biggest crowd against Homestead in the first night game on campus, playing under temporary lights despite opposition from neighbors. Yet it finished ahead of only Homestead in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division standings.

Interviewed earlier this month, Mountain View High athletic director John Payne would only say Carter “left for personal reasons” and declined to comment about the coach’s impact on the football program.

Mountain View High School football's offensive coordinator Trevor Pruitt was hired as head coach at Los Altos in February and took defensive coordinator Shonte Jiz de Ortega with him.
