Los Altos High School hosts Writers Week

During a previous Los Altos High School Writers Week, poet Joshua Blake Edwards discusses his craft with English students.

Los Altos High School students have an opportunity to interface with a lineup of professional writers, poets and journalists during the 28th annual Writers Week Monday through March 7.

The writers bring diversity in themes and genres. In addition to returning participants, first-timers will contribute their insights during the school’s yearly tradition of engaging all English students with noted writers from all walks of life.

The authors of fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, short stories, scripts, songs and blogs will meet with students and share their stories, their paths to becoming writers and the details of their writing processes.

Each Writers Week features an evening event open to the community. “An Evening of Pure Poetry” is scheduled 7 p.m. March 7 in Eagle Theater, 201 Almond Ave. Four Bay Area poets who represent a broad range of poetic forms and styles will read from their work and discuss the art of poetry. Featured speakers include Mario Chard, a Wallace Stegner Fellow in Poetry at Stanford University; Paul Flores, a published playwright and nationally prominent spoken-word performer; Amy Glynn Greacen, whose poems have merited extensive publication and won many major awards; and Chinaka Hodge, an up-and-coming young poet who hails from Oakland.

The week’s events open with Los Altos High’s annual Poetry Performance Competition (“Slam”) 7 p.m. Friday in Eagle Theater. The event is open to the public. Admission is $3.

Writers Week is the only high school program in the country that annually invites more than 25 authors to address the students in every English class.

Two Stanford University writing programs, Stegner Fellows (poetry and prose) and Knight Fellows (journalism) collaborate with Los Altos High to facilitate the week. The Tracey Cullinan Memorial Fund helped establish Writers Week. Los Altos High parents, committed to the concept that learning is reinforced, enhanced and inspired by visiting writers, now fund Writers Week.

Past visiting authors have included Gail Tsukiyama, “The Street of a Thousand Blossoms”; Daniel Handler, “Adverbs”; Khaled Hosseini, “The Kite Runner”; Daniel Alarcon, “Lost City Radio”; Wallace Stegner; and Amy Tan.

“Writers Week began the Los Altos High tradition, which now includes Science and Tech Week and History Week, that creates a powerful connection between the classroom and the professional lives students will one day lead,” said Galen Rosenberg, English teacher and Writers Week Committee member. “Writers Week makes the learning in the classroom even more real for our students, and is a great opportunity for the whole community to participate in an LAHS event.”
