The Judicial Council of California posthumously honored U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Matthew Patrick Manoukian Dec. 13 with the Stanley Mosk Defender of Justice Award.
Manoukian, 29, a Los Altos Hills native, was one of three Marines killed Aug. 10 during a predawn Ramadan meal and security meeting with local police in southern Afghanistan. The 2001 St. Francis High School graduate was on his fourth deployment to the region.
According to a statement announcing the 2012 award winners, Manoukian planned to start law school in 2013. At the time of his death, he was working with local Afghan governments to combat Taliban infiltration and disruption.
In his personal law school application statement, Manoukian wrote, “I have always thrived on challenge and constantly seek out self-improvement, and believe in contributing to the overall development of the team, group, and society.”
Manoukian is the son of Los Altos Hills residents Socrates “Pete” Manoukian, a Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge, and Patricia Bamattre-Manoukian, an Associate Justice of the Sixth District California Court of Appeal.
