Work on removal of an obstructive concrete pedestal at the corner of First and Main streets in downtown Los Altos is scheduled 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. The pedestal was originally intended as the base for a granite monolith that was removed earlier this year.
Removal of the concrete block, located in the middle of the sidewalk at the corner of the Chevron service station "will greatly improve pedestrian access around the corner and to the sidewalks," said city of Los Altos spokesperson Beverly Tucker.
The sidewalk around the pedestal will be closed while the removal is in progress. The area will be repaved as a sidewalk. The gas line and electrical lines in the pedestal will be capped, Tucker said, but remain underground in case they are needed in the future.
The southbound traffic lane of First Street will be closed for one block during the scheduled work facilitate removal. All driveways into and out of the Chevron station will remain open.
