Carmel Valley: Sunshine and sites

Photo By: Eren Gknar/ Special to the Town Crier
Photo Eren Gknar/ Special To The Town Crier In addition to its spectacular views, the sunny Carmel Valley offers a host of activities, from hiking to wine tasting.

Carmel Valley claims to have 300 days of sun a year, according to the Chamber of Commerce. The valley extends 12 miles inland and includes artists’ galleries, shops and fine dining.

• Stop by Earthbound Farm Organic, 7250 Carmel Valley Road. The farm stand, open 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays, provides a plethora of picnic lunch material. You might even find some gifts to take home to yourself. Owners Drew and Myra Goodman came to Carmel from Manhattan to farm 25 years ago and started a salad revolution with prewashed lettuce. And they said it couldn’t be done! Download an event calendar at www.ebfarm.com. Try the cut-your-own herbs garden or the children’s touchable foliage section.

• Garland Ranch Regional Park on Carmel Valley Road encompasses 5,000 acres of hiking, biking and horse-riding trails. Lots of trees provide shade for dining al fresco.

• Valley wineries include Chateau Julien, Bernardus Winery, Boëté Winery, Talbott Vineyards and Holman Ranch. Most are along Carmel Valley Road.

• Shop at Carmel Valley Village for home decor at The Lights of Rome, 8 Del Fino Place, or the Red Pear, 14 Del Fino Place. Head to Patricia Qualls Studio, 15 W. Carmel Valley Road, to view the art of a local expressionist painter.
