More open than ever: Editorial

One of the Los Altos City Council’s objectives for 2015 is implementing an open-government policy. The title of the policy may be somewhat misleading, because it’s not as if the city has had a closed-government policy. But the new proposal goes beyon...

Gawande's "Being Mortal" proves an important book on aging

Books about death and dying are usually not on my list of “must reads.”

I couldn’t resist, however, the best-selling “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” (Metropolitan Books, 2014) by Atul Gawande.

Start something great by ringing in the new year with prayer

There is a tradition, which I’m told originates in the Midwest, that calls for people to pray in the new year. A few years ago, I was invited to a friend’s house and a number of people stayed up until midnight (approximately two hours pa...

Earn money for schools by staying at local hotel

The Los Altos/Palo Alto Courtyard by Marriott sponsors the Cares & Shares Community Support Program, a campaign to advance education and civic projects in local communities.

The Cares & Shares program invites Los Altos residents and merchants to stay at the Courtyard, with $30 donated to local schools in the guest’s name for every room booked on weekends or holidays. The Courtyard also donates weekend packages to local schools and PTAs to use for silent auctions that raise money for educational programs.

In addition to donating revenue, the hotel has developed a website, www.caresshares.com, that allows local organizations to post their fundraisers and events, serving as an aggregator for community non-profit efforts.

Funds generated by the Cares & Shares program support technology projects in the Los Altos School District, including new computers in classrooms.

The Los Altos Community Foundation and the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce have partnered with the Courtyard’s campaign to contribute to early learning, childhood development and elementary school education in the community. The groups set a fundraising goal of $50,000 for 2012-2013 school year.

Living Classroom seeks volunteers

The Los Altos School District’s Living Classroom Program seeks volunteers who enjoy working with students and love nature.

The program reaches all grade levels within the district and includes hands-on education about science, history and math.

Training is available to acquaint docents with the lesson content; all materials are provided.

A docent and often an assistant docent – along with one or two volunteer parents inside or outside the classroom – direct lessons.

For more information, call program director Mike Sanderson at 947-1103 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
