Owls 2nd in state

The Foothill College men's tennis team fell 5-1 to College of the Desert May 6 in the state team championship match at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville. The Owls' only win came from Rodrigo Godoy at No. 4 singles. Foothill, champions of the Coast Conference and Northern California, finishes with a 16-7 overall record.

Mark the calendar

The NFL schedule is out, and former San Francisco 49ers coach George Seifert will bring his new team, the Carolina Panthers, to 3Com Park Oct. 17 for a 1:15 p.m. game. Seifert, a Los Altos resident who resigned from the Niners after the 1996 season, took over the coaching duties in Carolina this past January.

Be a life saver

The City of Mountain View Recreation Division is offering a lifeguard training class tomorrow through June 18 at Eagle Park Pool, 650 Franklin St. The course, taught by the American Red Cross, includes CPR training. The class meets from 7-10 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, June 5. Participants must be at least 15 years old. Cost is $150 for city residents, $160 for non-residents. Register at the Mountain View Community Center, 201 Rengstorff Ave. For more information, call 903-6331.

The Page Mill YMCA, 755 Page Mill Road in Palo Alto, has started registering players for its summer racquetball league. The league, which runs June 12 to Aug. 15, welcomes A-.
