STURDY WALL: Los Altos High graduate Kevin Wall recently ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns in Kansas Wesleyan University's 24-22 win over Ottawa University. For his play, Wall - who also caught a 34-yard pass to set up the winning field goal - was named the conference offensive player of the week. The Coyotes are 3-1 conference and 5-1 overall.

LIGHTNING STRIKES: The under-10 boys Mountain View-Los Altos Lightning I soccer club recently downed the Almaden Valley Raptors 2-1 in a Competition Division match. Jay Smith netted the Lightning's first goal and Ryan Reid and Langston Johnson teamed up for the second score; in the net, Jon Verna registered six saves to preserve the win.

COACHES CORNER: St. Francis High's athletes aren't the only ones receiving praise come competition time. The Central Coast Section recently named Sal Chavez, Steve Filios and Roberta Chisam honor coaches for the 1995-96 season. Chavez has led the boys soccer team to two CCS titles and heads the school Campus Ministry Service Program; Filios, whose boys basketball squad grabbed the state crown last season, received St. Francis' Urban Award for being its most outstanding teacher; and Chisam, who coaches the Lancers' outstanding track and field and girls cross-country teams, is a long-time member of the National Association of Biology Teachers.
