LA wildlife network honors actress-model Rossellini

Los Altos-based Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN) board member Isabella Rossellini and WCN partner Iain Douglas-Hamilton, founder of Save the Elephants (STE), have been honored for their work in preserving endangered animals.

Rossellini and Douglas-Hamilton were among leading wildlife advocates recognized by the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund with $100,000 grants to continue their efforts in wildlife conservation.

Rossellini said she would designate half of her grant to the Andean Cat Alliance, a multinational, non-profit WCN partner dedicated to conserving the endangered Andean cat that lives exclusively in the remote high-altitude deserts of the Andes in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru and is considered the most endangered cat species in the Americas. She donated the other half of her grant to veterinary research for endangered species.

Douglas-Hamilton said his grant would support Save the Elephants' ongoing research, education, conservation, monitoring and protection of elephants through projects across Africa, including Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, South Africa and Mali.

Best known for her work as an actress and model, Rossellini also has a lifelong passion for animals and art. In addition to her position on the WCN board of directors, Rossellini is involved in the conservation and restoration of wetlands in Long Island, N.Y.

Douglas-Hamilton conducted a pioneering study of elephant behavior in the late 1960s in Tanzania, and spearheaded efforts to ban the sale of ivory in Africa. In 1993 he founded Save the Elephants. For more information on the Wildlife Conservation Network, visit www.WildNet.org.
