Mountain View High’s Iva Celan was the lone local girls tennis player to advance beyond the opening round of the Central Coast Section Individual Tournament.
The unseeded junior bowed out in the quarterfinals of the singles competition, held Nov. 22 and 23 at Courtside Tennis Club in Los Gatos.
Celan defeated Santa Teresa’s Najah Simmons, also unseeded, 6-3, 7-6 in the first round. Celan next faced third seed Giannina Ong of Menlo, who prevailed 6-2, 6-4.
“Iva had a couple of chances to even the match up at one set each,” Mountain View coach Frank Smyth said. “She went up 4-2 in the second set but then lost four straight games as Ong closed out the match.”
Mountain View’s other representative in singles, sophomore Vivian Li, lost quickly to Mitty’s Mariska Chamdani. Smyth said unseeded Li “started slow and never got into the match” against No. 4 Chamdani, who won 6-1, 6-1.
St. Francis’ Mary Kloss lost her opener in straight sets as well. Top seed Crystal Yen of Saratoga beat the unseeded sophomore 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles, the Lancers’ unseeded duo of freshman Paulina Bajet and senior Angela Pratt lost in two close sets. Sixth-seeded Logan Finnell and Anna Romeka of Stevenson beat them 7-6, 6-5.
Foothill’s season ended in the second round of the NorCal playoffs with a 1-0 loss at American River Nov. 23.
“We had a few very good chances but couldn’t put it away,” said Owen Flannery, whose Owls edged Skyline by the same score in the first round.
Foothill lost in four games at Santa Rosa Saturday in the second round of the NorCal playoffs, 25-22, 15-25, 21-25, 17-25.
In opening-round action Nov. 23, Foothill swept visiting Butte 25-18, 25-23, 25-23. Noel Kwalick notched 14 kills for the Owls and Angie Larsen had 14 digs.
