Voters reject Foothill-De Anza tax

The Foothill-De Anza Community College District’s request for a $69-per-parcel tax failed to secure the two-thirds majority required to pass on the Gubernatorial General Election Nov. 2.

As of Monday’s press deadline, 69,338 residents (57.69 percent) voted in favor of Measure E, with 50,852 voters (42.31 percent) against the parcel tax.

“The Board of Trustees struggled for months deciding whether to put an educational funding measure on the ballot,” wrote Chancellor Linda M. Thor and Board President Bruce Swenson in a release to the Town Crier. “In the end, after seeing thousands of students unable to get classes they need, the board felt morally compelled to ask district voters if they would provide temporary local funding to help offset deep state budget cuts that have hurt so many students. It is bittersweet that a majority of voters supported Measure E but that it did not receive the necessary two-thirds approval.”

The release said moving forward, the district would continue to serve as many students as possible, reduce its expenses and pursue alternative funding sources.

“In the months ahead, we will advocate in Sacramento for improved funding for California’s community colleges and work together with our employees to address the district’s fiscal challenges,” they wrote.
