Dignitaries and executives broke ground Tuesday to signal the beginning of construction of the new environmentally friendly David and Lucile Packard Foundation headquarters at 343 Second St. in downtown Los Altos.
“This is the first step in taking this project up and running,” said Susan Packard, David's daughter.
The Foundation plans to consolidate their two current Los Altos offices into a two-story, 45,553-square-foot platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified building.
Officials hope to achieve net-zero energy which will set new standards, said President and CEO Carol Larson.
“It will honor the spirit of giving, the spirit of philanthropy and of Los Altos,” Larson said.
Construction is scheduled to begin immediately. Foundation officials are aiming for a summer 2012 opening day.
