Tips for setting, achieving fitness goals

Before getting started, set a realistic goal and be specific. For example: " I want to lose 1 inch around my mid-section by July 15.

Then, design a strategy that will help you achieve this goal. Include the following components:

Cardiovascular exercises. This will help burn fat.

Muscle strengthening exercises. This will tone your muscles.

Modify your eating habits.

Add some cardiovascular exercises. If you want to lose 1 inch from your midsection, or inches anywhere on your body, you must do cardiovascular exercise. These are activities that can be sustained for 20 minutes or more. Exercises such as brisk walking, bike riding, in-line skating and Step Aerobics all help to burn fat.

Do these activities three-four times a week, for 20-60 minutes.

Include muscle strengthening. When performed properly, sit-ups are one of the best strengthening activities you can do for the abdominal area.

Modify your eating habits. Make changes to your diet you can live with. Even small changes will help. For example, eat an early dinner five nights a week, drink 1 percent milk instead of 2 percent, keep high fat snacks out of the house, and decrease alcohol consumption.

Monitor your success. Measure yourself every two weeks. Increase your cardiovascular activity if you are not progressing as quickly as you wished.

Reward your efforts. Be proud of your achievements and reward yourself for having come this far.
