Volunteer recognized for efforts at Day Worker Center

Photo Submitted Photo The Chamber of Commerce in Mountain View recognized Kathie Franger as a hero for her dedicated volunteerism at the Day Worker Center of Mountain View.

The Chamber of Commerce Mountain View honored the Day Worker Center of Mountain view as Non-Profit of the Year. The center and longtime volunteer Kathie Franger were recognized as heroes at the “Celebration of Heroes” event Nov. 5 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

“Kathie has been an integral part of the center from our very beginning, always present, always punctual, always dedicated,” said Maria Marroquin, Day Worker Center executive director. “She cares deeply about the workers and has contributed thousands of hours of essential work to the center. She is our treasure.”

Franger said she has a strong interest in peace and justice.

“The Day Worker Center is a place where I can pursue justice,” she said. “It is a pleasure to connect with workers who are sacrificing so much to help their families, and with the wonderful volunteers and staff at the center.”

Franger said she became aware of the center through her church, St. Joseph’s of Mountain View.

The highlights of her work, she said, include driving the center’s van in the Mountain View Spring Parade; the center’s 10th anniversary celebration; the presentation of the center’s original, bilingual play, “La Espera,” performed by dayworkers; and marching with workers for immigrant rights.

Franger has lived in Mountain View for more than 50 years. She raised her children there and retired from the Mountain View Whisman School District.

The Day Worker Center of Mountain View serves dayworkers, employers and the surrounding community. The center aims to provide workers with a safe and supportive environment in which to find work and offer local employers a means to procure casual labor and household help. The center’s goal is for the community to benefit from a resource that promotes the integration, education and job-skill training of immigrants so that they can contribute more fully to the communities in which they work and live.
