Police Chief Bob Lacey's retirement announcement last week leaves a big hole in the department, and an even larger void at city hall. In just the past few months, the Los Altos city manager, police chief and public works director have all called it quits.
As Los Altos council members wind down the process for hiring a new city manager, now the city must look for a new chief of police at a time when officers are undergoing sensitive negotiations for a new contract.
Lacey's surprise announcement ends more than 25 distinguished years with the department. He continued in the friendly style of his predecessor Don Johnson, seeing through improvements in emergency preparedness and equipment upgrades.
He also did community outreach, such as his involvement in a task force to create an anti-drug climate for local youth. Especially now, his shoes will not be easy to fill.
