Hike held to remember Wallace Stegner

Docents Marilyn and Bill Bauriedel are scheduled to discuss Wallace Stegner, an early environmentalist and renowned writer, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 8 at Long Ridge. They invite hikers to bring a short reading to share.

Hikers will walk 4.7 miles at a moderate pace along the Peters Creek Trail and lunch on Long Ridge Road Trail, near the Wallace Stegner bench.

Participants will meet at the Grizzly Flat trailhead on the west side of Skyline Boulevard 3.6 miles north of Highway 9 or 3.3 miles south of Page Mill Road. If traveling north on Skyline Boulevard, the pullout is on the right, past Portola Heights Road. From the south, the pullout is near the Palo Alto city limits sign on the right.

Celebrating lilies of the field

Docents Paul Billig, Bill Blodgett and Sarah Schoen are scheduled to search for two species of mariposa lilies and other late-spring wildflowers 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 15 at Monte Bello.

The hike is moderately strenuous, covers 6 miles and rises approximately 1,000 feet in elevation.

Hikers will venture up the Bella Vista Trail to the Backpack Camp for a lunch break, then down the Indian Creek Trail and explore the woodlands along the Stevens Creek Nature Trail.

Participants will meet at the Monte Bello Preserve parking lot, located on Page Mill Road (across from Los Trancos Preserve), 7 miles west of Interstate 280 or 1.5 miles east of Skyline Boulevard.
