“The 2013 Children’s Data Book,” published by the Santa Clara County Children’s Agenda, provides an annual report on how local children are faring in four categories – Safety, Health, Success in Learning and Success in Life. The report cited ALearn’s Math Acceleration Program (MAP) as an example of improving middle-school math scores.

ALearn, a nonprofit organization founded in 2007 by Los Altos residents committed to helping underrepresented students in Silicon Valley enroll and succeed in college, sponsors academic and enrichment programs that increase achievement and raise student aspirations for college.

According to this year’s report, the percentage of eighth-grade students passing the Algebra/California Standards Test has increased by 85 percent since 2008.

ALearn launched MAP in 2008 with 80 students in one school district. Since its inception, more than 3,400 middle-school students have attended its MAP and MAP Plus programs.

“MAP students’ gains in math skills exceeded national norms,” reports the “Data Book.”

MAP students notched average pre-test score improvements of 100 percent in fractions and 40 percent in word problems in 2012.

According to the report, “MAP students showed statistically significant increases in all of the areas of attitude and study skills that the program sought to boost.”
