TheatreWorks’ regional premiere of “The Mountaintop” opened last week and is slated to run through April 7 at the Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.

Katori Hall’s drama reimagines the events on the night before the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

After delivering an oration supporting the Memphis sanitation workers’ strike in which he declares, “I have been to the mountaintop,” an exhausted King retires to his motel. Camae, a beautiful motel maid, arrives with King’s coffee, but it soon becomes clear she is not whom she appears to be. When Camae reveals some surprising news, King is forced to confront his life, his legacy and the future of his people.

Performances are scheduled 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays (no matinees March 30 and April 6); and 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays (no matinees March 31 and April 7). Student matinees are slated 11 a.m. April 2 and 4. The April 4 evening performance includes a tribute to King on the anniversary of his assassination. The play includes mature language.
