The Pinewood School boys basketball team made a hasty exit from the Northern California Division V playoffs, unable to match the defensive effort that propelled the Panthers to the section title five days earlier. No. 7 Head-Royce toppled 10th-seeded Pinewood 64-56 in opening-round action March 6. The host Panthers (14-12) surrendered twice as many points as they did in their rout of Alma Heights Christian in the Central Coast Section final.
Jayhawks senior Ryan Diew proved particularly hard for Pinewood to guard. He scored a game-high 24 points, 17 in the fourth quarter when Head-Royce (25-5) pulled away. Trailing 50-49 with 3:29 to play, the Panthers were outscored 14-7 the rest of the way. The Jayhawks made 12 of their 15 free throws in the fourth. “Head-Royce played as well as they could have and made keys plays down the stretch,” Pinewood coach Mani Messy said. Greg Naumann paced the Panthers with 15 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Owen Lewis and Josh Rose added 10 points each. Baseball Los Altos split its league-opening series against Wilcox, following a 6-3 home loss March 6 with an 8-4 road win Friday. Lambie Lanman earned the win Friday and Steven McLean totaled four hits for the Eagles (5-2 overall). Boys volleyball Mountain View beat Los Altos 25-10, 25-12, 25-17 Tuesday behind 17 kills from Kurt Dentinger. Softball Los Altos and St. Francis played to a 2-all tie Thursday, with the non-league game called in the fifth inning due to darkness. Both teams went to 3-1-1. Boys tennis Mountain View is off to a 1-1 start in league, beating Homestead and falling to Gunn.
