The regular season could not have gone much better for the Foothill College men’s basketball team, which entered the playoffs 22-5 overall and ranked fifth in the state. But the postseason couldn’t have gone much worse. After earning the highest seed in school history, the No. 3 Owls lost their opener 50-39 to No. 14 San Joaquin Delta March 2 in Los Altos Hills.
“These kids didn’t deserve that type of ending, but it makes for great life parallels,” said Foothill coach Shanan Rosenberg, a St. Francis High graduate. Held to fewer than 40 points for the first time this season, the Owls shot just 25 percent from the field against Delta (18-10). Forward Stephen Grosey led the Owls with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Despite the sour ending, Rosenberg is proud of what his team accomplished this season. Foothill placed second to undefeated San Francisco in the challenging Coast Conference North Division (9-3) and ranked as high as third in the state and second in Northern California. Four Owls made the all-conference team: freshman Grosey and sophomores Daryl Wong, Suhail Mohammadi and Brendan Carroll. “(It was an) excellent season not defined by the final contest, for sure,” the coach said. “It was a very special team.” Rosenberg noted that his players performed as well on the court as they did in the classroom this year. The team’s 3.5 grade-point average is “probably a first in state (community college) history for a top-five team.”
