Christ Episcopal Church turns 100 Saturday

Christ Episcopal Church of Los Altos is celebrating its 100th anniversary Saturday.

In recognition of the milestone anniversary, Los Altos Mayor Jarrett Fishpaw has proclaimed Saturday “Christ Episcopal Church Day.”

In his proclamation, Fishpaw pointed to the church’s fulfilling its mission “to serve and uplift people less fortunate.” Church outreach in the community includes support of the polytrauma unit at the Fisher House in Palo Alto, Habitat for Humanity and Boy Scout Troop 30.

Christ Episcopal Church, founded March 16, 1913, is located at 1040 Border Road.

Stanford Law School opens Religious Liberty Clinic

With the recent addition of the new Religious Liberty Clinic to the Mills Legal Clinic at Stanford Law School, law students will have opportunities for hands-on experience defending freedom of religion for a diverse group of clients.

A $1.6 million donation from the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, an institute dedicated to advocating the free expression of religion regardless of denomination, sponsors the clinic.

Participants in the clinics work as lawyers with real clients and real cases under the supervision of an attorney.

James Sonne, director of the Religious Liberty Clinic, joined the Stanford law faculty in 2012 after teaching at Ave Maria School of Law in Naples, Fla. His litigation experience includes church property disputes and cases concerning faith-based universities.

This quarter, students will defend a prisoner who recently converted to Judaism and was denied a circumcision by the prison. They’ll also file an informational brief in a case regarding Native American religious practices by prisoners.

“We’re trying to show that religious liberty is a universal human right shared by everyone regardless of religious belief, practice or background,” Sonne said.
