The Los Altos Senior Center honored volunteers Patricia Scheid and Laverne Uribe for their contributions at the California Parks and Recreation Society District 4 awards and volunteer recognition dinner Feb. 28.

Scheid is the center’s resident travel expert, escorting and preparing members for trips. She supports staff with registration and travel ideas and enforces industry standards. According to participants, they travel with the Senior Center because Scheid is the escort.

In addition to her travel duties, Scheid runs the Senior Center when staff is unavailable. She has worked up to 20 hours a week at times supporting staff, programming and participants. She arranges fresh flowers for the lobby and luncheon centerpieces and helps prepare food for the luncheons.

Members say they look forward to Scheid’s welcoming smile – she knows most participants by name.

Uribe has volunteered for the Senior Center for more than 17 years, helping with nearly every facet of the center’s operations. She has prepared meals and snacks, set up tables, manned the front desk and assisted with recreation registration. She is currently a bingo caller and movie host.

According to Senior Center staff, Uribe has helped to set standards at the center, paying attention to detail and taking action when things are out of order. Through the years, they said, she has exemplified the Senior Center values of greeting and getting to know participants on an individual basis.

Members lauded Uribe for being “genuine” and for working to improve what needs improving, while at the same time enjoying things as they are. Members agreed that Uribe will speak up for what she believes in and works hard for the betterment of her community.
