Construction crews are busy building new classrooms at Mountain View High School, above, and Los Altos High, right. New classroom buildings at Los Altos and Mountain View high schools are taking shape and on schedule for completion in August – just in time for the next school year. The classroom additions are among the projects funded by the $41.3 million Measure A bond passed in 2010. Joe White, the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District’s associate superintendent for business services, said construction of the classrooms – and renovations to some existing ones – would cost approximately $18 million to $19 million.
The two-story building under construction at Los Altos High – located behind the weight room, adjacent to the athletic fields – will house nine general-education classrooms and three art rooms. Two single-story buildings are scheduled for Mountain View High, both at the front of the campus along Bryant Avenue. The larger building will include a wing of nine general-education classrooms; the other will comprise three science classrooms (an earth science and two physics rooms) and include prep space for those classes. In addition to the new classrooms, White said the district is ready to solicit bids to renovate existing classrooms at both schools. Plans at Los Altos High include converting two art classrooms and a math classroom into three science rooms. The band room will be expanded as well. At Mountain View High, two physics classrooms will be converted into biology rooms. The renovations at Mountain View High are scheduled for completion before the start of the next school year, according to White. Renovations at Los Altos High should be finished by November. White said the district has been receiving funds for its solar canopies – also built with money from Measure A – faster than anticipated. The new classroom buildings will boast solar-energy panels on the roofs. Funds received from energy-saving programs go directly into the district’s general fund, benefiting students in the classroom, he added. A plan to refurbish Los Altos High School’s tennis courts is also in the works, according to White, but the funds will not come from Measure A. Construction crews currently are using some of the courts to house materials.
