A leak in a natural-gas line along San Antonio Road last week forced diversion of traffic and kept patrons and business owners indoors.A construction crew working on the San Antonio Road streetscape project inadvertently dislodged a natural-gas line Feb. 20, forcing the temporary closure of northbound San Antonio Road.

According to Los Altos Police Chief Tuck Younis, the leak occurred after construction workers pulled a tree root from the ground, causing the line to rupture and allowing gas to escape into the air along San Antonio Road and Parking Plaza 3.

The leak caused firefighters at the scene to divert traffic away from the northbound side of San Antonio Road, between Main Street and Foothill Expressway. Construction workers went door-to-door along Main Street urging patrons and business owners to stay inside, as a PG&E crew worked to cap the leak, with firefighters on standby.

Younis said the PG&E crew capped the gas line by approximately 2 p.m. The northbound direction of San Antonio Road reopened an hour later.

Los Altos Economic Development Manager Kathy Kleinbaum added that no one was injured. Construction workers were able to resume streetscape construction work Thursday morning.
