It’s been an up-and-down season for the Pinewood School boys basketball team, but Saturday the young Panthers showed signs that they are capable of defending their Central Coast Section Division V title.

Pinewood – the division’s second seed – clobbered No. 7 Crystal Springs Uplands 58-32 in a quarterfinal game at Alma Heights in Pacifica.

“The team played an outstanding game and stayed poised when it mattered the most,” Pinewood coach Mani Messy said. “We are peaking at the right time and hope to continue doing just that going forward.”

Guard Greg Naumann scored 11 points to pace the Panthers (12-11). He was one of 11 players to score for Pinewood.

The Panthers were slated to take on No. 3 St. Francis Central Coast Catholic (17-10) Tuesday, after the Town Crier went to press. The winner advances to Friday’s title game, set for 8 p.m. at Notre Dame De Namur University.

SF girls top Eastside

A second-half surge allowed St. Francis to overtake Eastside Prep in the first round of the CCS Open Division playoffs Friday at Oak Grove.

The fifth-seeded Lancers triumphed 45-36, outscoring the No. 4 Panthers 28-16 after intermission..

St. Francis (20-7) had three players finish with double-digit points: Shelbi Aimonetti (13), Jennifer Lucian (13) and Daisha Abdelkader (11).

The Lancers allowed Eastside (21-7) to score more than eight points in only the first quarter (12).

St. Francis is scheduled to face No. 8 Lynbrook (21-4) 7:30 p.m. today in the semifinals at Oak Grove. Lynbrook stunned No. 1 seed Sacred Heart Cathedral in Friday’s opening round.

Pinewood girls falter

Doomed by a slow start, seventh-seeded Pinewood lost Friday’s CCS Open Division opener against No. 2 Mitty.

The Panthers (20-7) mustered just two points in the opening half, and the Monarchs (22-6) prevailed 47-26 at Oak Grove.

But despite setting a season-low for points, Pinewood’s season did not end there.

The new Open Division of CCS has a consolation bracket, in which the Panthers (20-7) were scheduled to meet No. 3 St. Ignatius (18-9) Tuesday, after the Town Crier’s press deadline.
