Los Altos High School’s Green Team continues to promote sustainability this year by encouraging fellow students to walk, bicycle, skateboard or take a bus to school.
Each month the club hosts a Carbon Free Commute Challenge that incentivizes walking to school. Green Team members distribute raffle tickets to students who bicycle, bus, skateboard or walk to school and hand out prizes later in the day.
In February, the Green Team hosted activities in the quad at lunch and featured a Safe Moves Bicycle, which had a blender attached to the back. Students used the bicycle to make smoothies to hand out to students.
Safe Moves Bicycle representative Winona Hubbard said exhibiting the pedal-powered blending bike helps groups like the Green Team spotlight alternative forms of transportation.
“Lots of kids are aware (of the Carbon-Free Commute Challenge), but biking is not a cool thing,” said Maggie Kristain, Green Team member. “Biking is easier and cooler than they think.”
In addition to regular outreach to highlight sustainability and green choices, students successfully lobbied to institute a zero-waste policy on campus. The group also supports efforts to ban plastic bags in Los Altos and is planning an Earth Day activity in April.
“We want (students) to see how good (bicycling to school) feels and how easy it is,” said Wendy Wu, Green Team member.
