The Mountain View High girls soccer team couldn’t have finished the regular season any better. By winning their last three games, the Spartans enter this week’s Central Coast Section playoffs on a roll. “It was nice to end the season with three wins heading into CCS to gather some momentum, which is crucial at this stage of the season,” coach Ivan Bandov said. “We’re close to getting 100 percent healthy as a team, which will also give us a better chance to advance in the playoffs.”
Mountain View, the defending CCS Division I champion, capped league play with a 4-0 rout of Gunn Feb. 13. Allie Gamble, Morgan Matthews, Erica Higa and Rachel Uyeda scored for the visiting Spartans. The win guaranteed Mountain View a second-place finish in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division (at 8-3-1) and boosted the team’s overall record to 15-4-1. Rival Los Altos finished just behind the Spartans in the division standings. The playoff-bound Eagles (7-3-2 league, 14-3-2 overall) had a chance to capture the league title but fell 4-1 at first-place Los Gatos Feb. 13. Los Altos scored in the first half on a shot by Allie Crum. Pinewood’s playoff fate was uncertain as the Town Crier went to press. After going undefeated to win the West Bay Athletic League Skyline Division (13-0-1), the Panthers lost Thursday’s match at King’s Academy – the fourth-place team in the WBAL’s upper Foothill Division – to determine who receives the league’s final automatic CCS berth. King’s won 4-2, scoring all its goals in the first half while shutting out Pinewood. The Panthers scored in the 61st and 65th minutes on shots from Amrita Mecker and Kelly Branson, respectively. The loss left Pinewood hoping for an at-large berth in CCS. “If that falls through, we can look back at a successful season when we reached our goal of wanting to win the division crown and therefore playing next season in the Foothill Division,” co-head coach Michael Tetzlaff said. Boys soccer SCVAL De Anza Division champion Mountain View – which capped the regular season with 1-0 wins over Homestead and Gunn – expected to nab a favorable seed in the CCS playoffs. “(It’s) hard to know about the seed, as we are right on the bubble of being in (CCS) Division I and II,” coach Jim McGuirk said. “My guess would be somewhere around a four seed in either one. Both divisions will be pretty tough, so it really doesn’t matter which one we are in.” Wrestling Los Altos’ Sean Lanoza (152 pounds) has qualified for this weekend’s CCS championships at Independence and teammate Carter Lee (138) is an alternate.
