Two dozen members of the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District’s senior class have qualified as finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Only the top 1 percent of applicants in the nation receive National Merit finalist recognition.
Each year, approximately 1.5 million entrants participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in a program co-sponsored by the College Board. The standardized test measures critical reading, math problem-solving and writing skills.
The National Merit Scholarship Program began in 1955 as a national competition to identify and honor academically talented U.S. high school students. The selection committee determines finalist status based on high academic standards. The students, the highest-scoring entrants in each state, will compete for National Merit, corporate-sponsored and college-sponsored scholarships and awards.
The finalists from Los Altos High School are John R. Beutter, Emily Y. Cheng, Runming Dai, Blaine M. Dzwonczyk, Alice A. Hau, Catherine Y. Hua, Libbie A. Katsev, Jacqueline Liu, Jerry J. Liu, Hongyi Shi, Richelle L. Smith, Natasha M. Welingkar, Jonathan R. Yu and Allison Derecho Yuen.
The finalists from Mountain View High School are Evan I. Cohen, Jennifer Duan, Diana N. Gong, Megan A. Joseph, Nadia L. Khayrallah, Naib A. Mian, Eli Nelson, Lauren Keiko Salinero, Janet L. Uhlir and Conan X. Zhou.
“It is with great pride that we congratulate our 24 National Merit Finalists,” said Associate Superintendent Brigitte Sarraf. “These students are among the best and brightest in our community. We wish them well as they compete for these scholarships and pursue their dreams for the future.”
Menlo School students Perry Ha and Cameron Walker of Los Altos and Tinyen Shih of Mountain View also were named National Merit finalists.
