Police responded to Mountain View High School this morning (Feb. 14) when multiple callers reported a person dressed in camouflage and wearing a gas mask walking onto campus.

A student, 18-year-old Christopher Egerton of Mountain View, admitted he wore the attire as a prank, according to police. No weapons were involved and police reported that no students or staff members were put into jeopardy at any point.

Mountain View Police Sgt. Sean Thompson reported that after getting the calls, all of the department's patrol units, traffic units and detectives responded to the school, and Los Altos police provided assistance as well. They collectively set up a perimeter around the school and filled the surrounding neighborhood preparing for a search.

Thompson said that patrol officers recalled contacting a young man in similar attire several months ago, and were able to identify Egerton as a student at the high school. School resource officers contacted him in class and he "admitted to the prank," Thompson said.

The 18-year-old was "admonished for his actions" and arrested under California Penal Code 415.5, under which causing a disturbance on school grounds can be a misdemeanor offense.
