MVLA foundation hosts parent education event The Los Altos-Mountain View School Speaker Series has scheduled psychologist Dean Blumberg to discuss “Teen Brains: The Latest Research on Understanding and Growing the Adolescent Brain” 7-9 p.m. Feb. 28 in Los Altos High School’s Eagle Theater, 201 Almond Ave. Blumberg, coordinator of Adolescent and Family Treatment at San Francisco Kaiser Permanente, will use his clinical experience to spotlight healthy and unhealthy risk-taking and the adolescent mind. His presentation will include information on preventing drug and alcohol abuse, understanding the impact of substances on the developing mind and communicating effectively with teenagers.
The Mountain View-Los Altos High School Foundation and the Los Altos-Mountain View PTA Council co-sponsor the event. Admission is free and open to the public. Los Altos High sponsors eWaste collection event Los Altos High School has scheduled an electronic waste drive 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 2 in the school parking lot, 201 Almond Ave. Green Mouse Recycling, a state-approved electronic waste recycling service for schools, will oversee the event. Students and school officials will ensure that all items are recycled according to state rules and regulations. Electronic items accepted include but are not limited to monitors, televisions, computers, laptops, telecom equipment, wires/cables, PC boards, scrap metal, mice, keyboards, printers, fax and copy machines, stereo equipment, DVD/CD/MP3 players, microwave ovens, small appliances, and VHS and audio cassette tapes. PNG seeks volunteers Partners for New Generations, a nonprofit group that has provided mentors and tutors to local students for 16 years, has scheduled a volunteer information night and open house 6-7 p.m. March 14 at Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District offices, 1299 Bryant Ave., adjacent to Mountain View High School. PNG coordinators from both programs, elementary and middle school tutoring and high school mentoring, will provide a brief overview of the organization and how it functions locally. Teens and their volunteer adult mentors do everything from bowling to hiking, cooking and going to movies. Primarily they talk – and listen – to one another. The relationships are designed to help struggling students build self-esteem and find positive direction in their lives. PNG hopes to attract new volunteers, but there is no obligation to sign up. Egan Junior High offers parent info events Egan Junior High School has scheduled information events for parents of new students and students currently in the sixth grade. Parents are invited to tour the campus, observe classroom activities and ask questions. Tours are scheduled 9:30-10:45 a.m. and 7-8:15 p.m. March 27 and 1:30-2:45 p.m. March 28. The sessions feature a presentation by the principal, current student perspectives, questions and answers, and a quick campus tour. All tours will offer the same information, but the evening program will not include a campus tour. Egan Junior High is located at 100 W. Portola Ave., Los Altos. The school serves seventh- and eighth-grade students who reside in the Los Altos School District. For more information, call 917-2200. Loyola K-Kids launch eyeglasses drive The Loyola School K-Kids Club, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Los Altos, will attempt to set a club record during its eighth annual “Share Old Spectacles” drive. The students have set a goal of collecting 1,500 pairs of eyeglasses. The K-Kids Club, comprising second- through sixth-graders, has collected more than 9,000 pairs of glasses in eight years with the help of the public and local storeowners who offered space for donation boxes. The glasses are sent to Direct Relief International in Goleta, where they are repaired, prescriptions identified and then distributed to those who need them in the U.S. and throughout the world. Donation boxes are available at Loyola School, 770 Berry Ave.; Los Altos Bakery, 692 Fremont Ave.; the Los Altos Town Crier, 138 Main St.; Heritage Bank of Commerce, 419 S. San Antonio Road; Wildberry Yogurt, 656 Fremont Ave.; Brian’s Restaurant, 680 Fremont Ave.; and the El Camino YMCA, 2400 Grant Road.
