Robert Gayle Shriver, 60 yr resident of Los Altos, passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2013. He was just one week shy of 96. Beloved father of four, Bob is survived by his children: Carol Dulleck (Dean), Joan Vennetti (Richard), Mary Ota (Ken) and Bob, Jr. (Jean), as well as 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Born Feb. 5, 1917 in Freedom, PA, Bob, as he was known to family and friends, attended the University of Pittsburgh as an engineering major, where he met and married Anna Maryetta MacKenzie. Married nearly 70 years, his beloved wife passed away in March of 2010.
Bob was employed by Westinghouse, initially in Pittsburgh, PA. Having decided he enjoyed the bay area its climate after spending the better part of a year on a project in Berkeley, Bob transferred to the company’s Sunnyvale location. His business travels took him to Europe and Japan, and he loved sharing stories of his experiences. His accomplishments were many, and he retired in 1980 as Operations Manager after 41 years of service to Westinghouse.
Bob was an avid follower of both Stanford and Pitt football. In earlier years, he liked fishing, and watching the sport of boxing.
Enjoying an early retirement at 63, Bob and Maryetta traveled extensively both within the United States and Europe. They delighted in crisscrossing the U.S. by car to visit friends and family. They also loved exploring England and other parts of the UK, as well as Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France.
Bob had a passion for building things, and found relaxation in tinkering under the hood of a car. Weekends and summers found him and the family up at one of the 3 mountain homes in Calaveras County which he designed and built over the years. He also enjoyed woodworking and was always building a mantel, desk, etc for one of his children. His many projects around his residence led his children to call him “Mr. Winchester”, from his adding on to the house, remodeling the kitchen, and the patio room addition where all enjoyed many family dinners in the summertime.
Active member in the congregation at Christ Church of Los Altos, Bob served on the Vestry for a number of years, and was often an usher. Services were held there Feb. 7, 2013. He will be greatly missed by friends and family.
